Belize: Best place for Canadians to retire in the world

Belize: Best place for Canadians to retire in the world

Belize, A Great Country For Canadians to Retire and Invest

Far from the biting winds and cold of winter, Belize is a tropical paradise located in Central America with a long coastline on the Caribbean Sea and hundreds of offshore islands. Belize is the only country in the region where English is the official language, and the government has very attractive minimal residency requirements that allow qualifying individuals to import all of their personal goods, including vehicles and light aircraft, into Belize tax-free.

Currently, only WestJet offers non-stop service to Belize from Canada. Beginning on October 29, 2016, WestJet began offering twice weekly non-stop flights from Toronto’s Pearson airport (YYZ) to Belize City. Although Canadians have a number of additional options to reach Belize via connecting flights in the United States, there are plans to increase the number of direct Canada-Belize flights in the near future.

On March 15, 2017, Manuel Heredia, Junior, the Belizean Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, said, “I know that you’ve heard that it is very likely that JetBlue will be flying to Belize by November. And we’re in talks with WestJet to add a new route from Calgary to Belize, all of which are positive steps in the right direction.”

Indeed, it is directly due to the tireless work of the Belize Tourism Board that more airlines and cruise ship operators are adding new routes to Belize. This increase in arrival options has made it much easier and more affordable for Canadians to vacation, retire, and invest in Canada.

One of the top destinations for North American expats and retirees is the Corozal District in northern Belize. Conveniently located to top destinations inside the country like Ambergris Caye, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and other top spots on the Belize Barrier Reef for fishing, snorkeling, sailing, and scuba diving, national parks, and ancient Maya ruins like Altun Ha and Lamanai. Corozal District benefits cooler weather during the hot months and the gorgeous Chetumal Bay is a paradise for sailing, swimming, and recreation.

Corozal District has an additional advantage in that is located directly adjacent to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, home to low-cost retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club as well as the popular resort town and airport in Cancun. Many expat residents of Corozal District frequently travel across the border to Mexico for medical care or to take advantage of low-cost flights from Cancun to major cities in the United States and Canada.
