Belize’s biggest beer brand introduces new Belikin Light

The Belize Brewing Company, best known for its flagship Belikin beer, announced this week the launch of its new Belikin Light line of beers.

The launch of Belikin Light is an important step for the company, according to Belikin Brew-master Nolan Michael. Having recognized a market for the light-beer demographic, Belikin began developing its new product in January with Nolan at the helm, developing and refining the new recipe. Now just about six months later, Belikin Light will hit stores across the country starting this July retailing for the same cost as a regular Belikin.

Belikin beer has always been popular with tourists who visit Belize. The brand is synonymous with the true Belizean experience and the company’s classic European lager, brewed in its state of the art German-engineered facility using Canadian Pilsner and German hops, has kept visitors to the country coming back for more. With its new Light beer, Michael says, it was important to the company for Belikin Light to maintain the flavor profile of the Belikin flagship.

During the development process, the company went through several adjustments before settling on the perfect brew.

“You will still get the same great malt flavor; the same great hop flavor, however, we have reduced the body on the beer a bit,” Michael said of the new Light beer. Belikin Light contains less calories than its original counterpart and has a 3.8 percent alcohol content. The company had to make several modifications in its brewing process to find the right balance for the light brew, which Michael calls “a delicious great tasting beer”. The new beer captures the rich heritage of Belikin but with a lighter profile perfect for the conscious, healthy lifestyle.

The company, which was established in 1969, began construction on its brewery and started selling Belikin Beer and Stout in 20 oz bottles in 1971. Apart from its seasonal Chocolate and Sorrel stouts, which have become very popular, Belikin has not added another year-round beer to its line up until the introduction of Belikin Light this week.

And while Belikin hopes that its new Light Beer will be a hit with consumers, the company may still have more in store. For now, let’s just say that Belikin is likely to be making another announcement within the next few months that will surely excite beer-lovers, not just in Belize, but all over the globe.
