Today November 19th is Garifuna Settlement Day – the day that the Garifuna people first arrived in Belize in the 1800’s.
The holiday was created by Thomas Vincent Ramos, a Belizean Garifuna civil activist in 1941 but was declared a public and bank holiday until 1977.
Right now as I type this blog post, the major festivities are occurring in the culture capital of Dangriga. Parades, street music, traditional dancing, and drumming are just a few of the many fun filled activities that are being performed in Southern Belize.
On behalf of the Belize Hub Team, we wish everyone a Happy Garifuna Settlement Day!
