Why Beaches Aren’t The Only Reason To Visit Belize

Belize Toucan

If you’re looking for a holiday destination a bit further off the beaten track but still with a wide variety of sights to enjoy, then you could do much worse than Belize.

With sandy shores, a coral-fringed coastline and clear turquoise waters, it’s not surprising that Belize is often associated with beaches.

But sun and sand aren’t the only reasons to visit Belize; this small but mighty Central American country is packed with culture and adventures to be had.

Carry on reading to find six more reasons to visit Belize…

1.  Exotic wildlife

Belize’s pristine, translucent waters and coral reefs are home to exotic marine wildlife made up of colorful fish, turtles, rays, lobsters and even whale sharks. Pure paradise to scuba-divers and snorkelers who want to be immersed in nature.

The tiny uninhabited islands that pepper Belize’s coastline line can also be reached by short boat rides, and there are many tours and trips available.

Further inland, the steamy rainforest echoes with the sound of monkeys screeching and brightly-colored parrots flying overhead. A network of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries provide the perfect setting to admire the amazing flora and fauna.

The biodiversity of this small but mighty country is quite extraordinary; what further reason do you need to go?

2.  Buzzing city life

It’s not just the exotic wildlife out in the jungle and sea that are worth visiting Belize for; the lively cities of this Central American country make for a buzzing nightlife and exciting destination.

The biggest of these is historical capital Belize city — which is a varied urban landscape made up of handsome colonial houses, bustling shopping areas and grungy streets.

Here, you can find all sorts to keep you occupied, from the culture-rich and beautiful Museum of Belize full of ancient artefacts to sites steeped in history to

At night, you can party at lively bars, catch a concert, or head to the Princess Hotel and Casino for an alternative night of gaming. Before you go, make sure you brush up on your poker skills or learn how to win at slots to make the most of a night at the casino.

3.  Ancient Mayan ruins

Belize is home to some incredible Mayan ruins — remnants of a rich and mysterious ancient civilization that date back thousands of years.

There are many archaeological sites to choose from across the country, where you can visit stone temples, excavated tombs and the natural caves where sacrificial rituals took place.

If you only visit one Mayan site on your trip, then it has to be Actun Tunichil  Muknal (known as ATM for short) in the Cayo District. Hire a guide to help find your way through the luscious jungle, before you don a helmet and touch to explore the caverns below.

4.  Delicious food

Belize is a melting pot of different cultures — from Creole to the Caribbean to Latin American and Mayan — and this is no clearer represented than in Belizean food culture.

Pick up some street food in the form of salbutes (fried tortillas topped with pulled chicken, avocado, tomato, lettuce and pickled red onion) or tasty tamales. Unlike Mexican tamales — which are wrapped in corn husks — Belizean tamales are made using plantain leaves, and are stuffed with seasoned meat and vegetables before being steamed. Super yummy.

Be sure to try some of the incredible seafood dishes available too; the long Caribbean coastline provides rich pickings, so everything from grilled lobster to conch fritters to ceviche (like a fresh fish salsa) can be found.

5.  No shortage of fun activities

Whether it’s diving in the incredible Blue Hole, kayaking around colorful reefs or hiking through the humid rainforest, there is no shortage of fun activities and exciting adventures to be had in Belize.

If you’re a thrillseeker or an adrenaline junkie, get yourself to the sea where you can spend the day surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, or scuba-diving below the glimmering surface in search of the rich marine life that lives amongst the coral.

If you fancy a day away from the sandy shores and heat of the sun, then you can travel inland; the jungle offers all types of adventures, from hiking trails to mountain biking to whitewater rafting down the jungled-edged rivers.

As you can see, there are many reasons why you should visit Belize — not just the beaches! So what are you waiting for? Book that flight and discover a country rich in culture, adventure and beauty.
