The Crystal Cave, known locally as the Mountain Cave, is a dry cave once used for secret Maya ceremonies. The ancient Maya revered caves and reserved them for their most sacred celebrations.

The cave is known for its huge, intricate, stalactites and stalagmites that give the underground chamber its name. It’s also impressive for the many Maya artifacts, including pottery, wall carvings, and human remains, that remain untouched there.

It is in the Blue Hole National Park, which is located along the scenic Hummingbird Highway in Belize’s Cayo District. The park is a jungle preserve managed by the Belize Audubon Society.

A tour of this cave is physically and emotionally demanding. It begins with an hour-long hike through the forest preserve at Blue Hole National Park. After you reach the entrance of the cave, you rappel 15 feet into the entrance.
