Belize announces Caribbean Spiny Lobster closed season

Lobsterfest In Belize

The Belize Fisheries Department is officially announcing the closure of the fishing season for the Caribbean Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus), effective February 29, 2024. This closure, enforced under the regulations outlined in Statutory Instrument No. 128 of 2021, initiates the annual closed season running from March 1st to June 30th.

In alignment with the harmonized regional lobster regulation (OSP-02-09) established by the Organization for Central American Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector (OSPESCA), Belize joins its regional counterparts in the commitment to sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation.

The closed season aims to protect the spiny lobster populations during their peak breeding period, ensuring the sustainability of this vital resource for future generations. The Belize Fisheries Department urges all fishers and the public to comply with these regulations, emphasizing that the possession of lobster during the closed season is strictly prohibited. Violators will face legal actions under the Fisheries Resources Act Chapter 210 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020.
