Belize’s endangered Yellow-Headed Parrot now has the chance to fly international by becoming one of Frontline Airlines’ next featured endangered species, by way of an online voting process to select among six other endangered animals.
The airline which has been described as one of America’s greenest airlines said that they were launching the poll in an effort to select one of six endangered species from the region to adorn the tail of one of their newest aircraft. According to the airline, the idea was birthed as a way of celebrating its latest expansion to the Caribbean and Latin America, with a campaign highlighting the plight of endangered animals in the region.
The line of endangered animals includes the Yellow-Headed Parrot from Belize, which has been experiencing a severe decline since the mid-1970. This is being caused by poachers who hunt them down for illegal pet trade as well as habitat loss. With only about 7,000 species remaining in the country the possibility of the Yellow-Headed Parrot becoming extinct in the near future remains of great concern.
Also on the list is the Bahama Warbler, the Coqui Llanero, from Puerto Rico which is described as one of the smallest tree frogs in the world, the Whistlin Duck from Antigua, and Barbuda, the Pink Headed Warbler from Guatemala, and the Two-Toed Slot from Coast Rica.
