Belize May Become the Next Stop on Mexico’s Tren Maya Railway Expansion

Tren Maya

The tracks of progress may soon extend beyond the borders of Mexico into Belize as discussions about expanding the Tren Maya railway resurface. Governor Mara Lezama Espinoza of Quintana Roo has reignited the conversation with a proposal to extend a section of the Tren Maya into Belize, once Mexico completes its ambitious 1,554-kilometer rail project.

On Wednesday, Governor Lezama Espinoza shared her vision of a rail line that would not only traverse southeastern Mexico but also connect with Central and South America, potentially revolutionizing commercial and tourist activities in the region. The extension would occur after the scheduled completion of the Tren Maya in February 2024.

The idea of the Tren Maya reaching into Belize is more than a fleeting thought; it’s a proposal that currently lies with the Federal Government of Mexico. Authorities are actively evaluating the feasibility of such an international connection, with a keen focus on Belize as the pivotal neighbor to bridge with.

Governor Lezama Espinoza outlined the multifaceted benefits of this project, emphasizing its potential to enhance connectivity and foster cultural and economic exchanges between Mexico and Belize. The cross-border expansion of the Tren Maya would symbolize not just a leap in infrastructure development but also a stride toward greater regional unity.

Despite the excitement surrounding this international link, the Governor underscored that President López Obrador’s immediate priority remains the completion of the Tren Maya within Mexico. The project’s success at home is paramount before any international endeavors can be pursued.

The seeds of this cross-border railway extension were sown during a visit by Belize’s Prime Minister Johnny Briceño to Mexico in October 2021. The Prime Minister expressed Belize’s interest in the Tren Maya during meetings with Mexican authorities in Cancun, including then-Fonatur head Rogelio Jiménez Pons. There, the potential benefits of extending the train to the Chetumal-Belize border and even to Santa Elena were discussed, promising significant advantages for those regions.

If the proposal receives the green light, Belize will seek its own investment opportunities, ensuring that the extension does not impact the financial framework of the Tren Maya in Mexico. This diplomatic and infrastructural development stands as a testament to the forward-thinking leadership in the region, promising new avenues for growth and cooperation between neighboring nations.

Should this extension be realized, the Maya Train will not only carry passengers but also hopes for a more interconnected and prosperous future for the people of Mexico and Belize.
