Beach, reef and jungle: a Placencia itinerary for every traveler

Beach, reef and jungle: a Placencia itinerary for every traveler

With golden beaches, calm Caribbean water and easy access to the reef, jungle and rivers of southern Belize, Placencia is built for a long weekend. Four days is just enough time to snorkel, explore, eat well and still leave room to do absolutely nothing by the pool.

The ideal base is Sirenian Bay Resort, a beachfront property in Manatee Bay Estates near Maya Beach and Seine Bight. Named for the manatees that frequent these waters, the resort offers luxury villas and all inclusive bungalows, a swimming pool with a swim up bar, a poolside bar, a hot tub, a fitness center, spa services and kayaks for guest use. It’s about an 11 minute drive from Placencia Airport, making arrival easy.

Day 1: Arrive and settle into beach time

Fly into Placencia and check in at Sirenian Bay. Spend the afternoon on the beach or at the pool, grab a drink at the swim up bar and watch the evening settle over the Caribbean. Keep the first night easy with dinner at the resort.

Day 2: Snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef

Start with a cooked to order breakfast, then head out on a boat trip to Laughing Bird Caye National Park, part of the Belize Barrier Reef World Heritage Site. Expect clear water, coral gardens, rays and colorful reef fish. Between March and June, divers can also time a trip to Gladden Spit for the chance to see whale sharks. Back at the resort, unwind with a massage or a soak in the hot tub.

Day 3: Jungle and river adventure

Trade the sea for the rainforest. A Monkey River tour takes you upriver past mangroves to spot howler monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas and birds, with a chance of seeing manatees along the way. Prefer hiking? Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, the world’s first jaguar preserve, offers waterfall trails and river tubing within driving distance of the peninsula.

Day 4: Paddle, explore and say goodbye

Take a morning kayak along the shoreline from Sirenian Bay, then head south to Placencia Village. Stroll the famous sidewalk, browse local shops and stop for gelato or fresh seafood before one last swim back at the resort.
