The popular archeological site of Xunantunich, located in San Jose Succotz Village in the Cayo District, has been getting some local and international attention after it was used as a backdrop inDJ Osocity’s latest Amapiano Mix, which was released yesterday on YouTube.
In launching the new South African mix, Dj Osocity captioned it, ”You Better BELIZE IT. I’m so blessed to be standing in Ancient History. Today I become the 1st ever DJ in the world to play in front of a Maya Temple! This is such a monumental moment and I’m so grateful for this opportunity by the beautiful country of Belize.”
The popular and well-loved Dj visited Belize in mid-February of last month and while he had toured Belize City, the Cayes, and Western Belize to interact with the people and culture, speculations at the time were that he was on a working visit and was going to use the country’s rich landscape to film one of his mixes. Well finally the cat is out of the bag and we know that he just like others before him was captivated and lured away by the mesmerizing, ‘Stone Woman’ or ‘Maden of the Rock.’
Known locally as Xunantunich, the site is named after a local legend that tells the story of a beautiful Maya maiden with fire-red eyes who is said to have appeared to local hunters, beckoning them to follow her into a cavern before disappearing.
According to history, it is believed that Xunantunich was founded during the Preclassic Maya Era, before expanding around the year 600, to becoming among one of the largest Maya sites in the country before it was abandoned for unknown reasons. To date one of the temples known as El Castillo is still the second tallest man-made structure in Belize.
Since posting the video online, there has been nothing but positive feedback from people around the world who have now added Belize to their bucket list of countries to visit.
In closing off, his post about Xunantunich Osocity wrote, ”it’s so amazing and full of History! When You Visit Belize You have to check it out.”
