Galen University expands its academic reach; enrollment grants offered

Friday, July 11, 2014. PATRICK E. JONES Reporting: Belizeans wishing to pursue higher education in two non-traditional sectors are being offered an opportunity to do so without having to leave Belize.

Galen University, the country’s premier private university, is offering an undergraduate degree in Sustainable Tourism Management and an undergraduate degree in Sustainable Economic Development.

The Director of Enrolment Services at Galen, Shamayne Rosado Avila, explains that these two new programs are open to students from both private and public sectors.

The programs are being offered in a hybrid format, with classes to be offered in the evenings and on Saturdays.

In addition to the two new programs, all of the academic programs being offered at Galen University are open to a range of tuition grants, based on the programs that are being applied for.

According to the Chief Operating Officer at Galen University, Paul Sokolson, all incoming students for the institution’s Fall Semester which starts on Saturday, August 23 are eligible for up to 20% tuition grants.

Galen University which recently underwent a smooth transition to a new management, plans to continue building on the successes that the institution have already established since it opened its doors.

Strengthening linkages with international partner institutions is something that sets Galen University apart from other tertiary education institutions in Belize.

In this regard, Galen recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, which means that incoming students can enroll in general education courses being offered under that partnership agreement that will eventual lead up to a degree in related fields.

As for its link with the University of Indianapolis, Sokolson says that program is being discontinued, but it will not affect qualifying students currently enrolled in degree courses under the program.

Sokolson says qualifying students will be able to continue their studies and graduate with their fully-accredited degree in their chosen course of studies.

The seamless transition to a new management to reflect the change in focus for the owners of Galen University will also be felt at the student level, according to the Director of Enrolment Services.

Shamayne Rosado Avila says there will continue to be a strong focus on students and student services and that all the incoming students will experience that expanded focus.

Galen University currently boasts a student population of just under 400; but the goal is that by the start of the Fall Semester, that number will grow to just under 500.

The enrolment at Galen University continues to mirror national trends in that more women than men are pursuing higher education.  Rosado Avila says that students’ perception toward the confidence in the quality of education they are receiving at Galen remains high and she does not foresee any change in that position any time soon.

The officials at Galen University are also committed to their continued strong community relations and welcomes the opportunity to work together with social organizations for the benefit of the community and Belize.

Persons interested in enrolling at Galen University are encouraged to contact the Enrolment Services Office via email at: admissions@galen.edu.bz.

Further information on programs offered by Galen University is also available on the institution’s website at: www.galen.edu.bz or by calling telephone number 824- 3226.
