Belize is one of the world’s best-hidden vacation destinations, and some of us would rather keep it that way. Despite this Caribbean paradise drawing in huge numbers of visitors, there must be some negative qualities that these vacationers are all missing out on. We’ll run down the 9 reasons why you should never come to visit Placencia.
1. The People Are Too Friendly
Placencia may be becoming increasingly more popular with travelers, but it’s still got the vibe of a fishing town. That means that people are likely to wave and smile as you pass, and you’ll almost assuredly find yourself drawn into warm conversations with locals. For those of us that like an impersonal customer service experience, that makes Belize a terrible place to go.
2. You Don’t Need to Learn a Foreign Language
Belize was once a British colony, and that has resulted in the boring side effect of English being the national language. Sure, you’ll never have to worry about getting lost after being told directions in another language, but culture shock is part of the fun!
3. The Temperature is Too Perfect
Belize enjoys highs in the 80s and lows in the 70s almost all year long, meaning it’s absolutely not the place you want to go if you’re trying to enjoy a white Christmas. After all, what’s the point of swimsuit season if it’s that way all year long?
4. And So is the Weather
Sunny days are the norm throughout Belize, and that’s even true during this Caribbean nation’s so-called “green season”. While tropical storms aren’t unheard of here, most of the rainfall during the summer and fall happens late in the evening or early in the morning.
5. There’s Too Many Beaches
The Placencia Peninsula stretches roughly 16 miles from North to South, but it’s only about a half-mile wide. That means that you can hardly walk a few blocks without running into a beach. If you’re someone traveling to paradise for the chance to get away from glistening white beaches and majestic blue waters, a visit to Belize is the wrong idea.
6. There are Few Chances to Practice Your Driving
Things move at their own pace in Placencia, and that means that cars aren’t nearly as prevalent as they are elsewhere. Navigation by golf cart or bicycle is often as effective as travel by car. Hopefully, you won’t get too homesick for traffic jams.
7. There’s Jaguars Nearby
Sure, the jaguars are located in nearby Cockscomb Basin Forest Reserve — the first jaguar preserve in the world — and the jaguars rarely get close enough for people to see. But if the very thought of big cats is enough to scare you away, Belize’s got quite a few.
8. There Are Too Many Islands to Choose From
The Placencia Peninsula has the vibe of an island, but there are over 400 proper cayes off of the coast of Belize if you’re looking to explore. Placencia is ideally positioned to provide access to many of them. Whether you want a secluded island for a picnic or a day trip somewhere more substantial, you’re going to find yourself overwhelmed with options.
9. You Won’t Want to Leave
We can spend all day trying to convince ourselves why we can’t afford a vacation, but the biggest threat is that you’ll never want to come back home. And with more people than ever choosing to retire in Placencia, that’s a perfectly reasonable fear to have.
