If you’re planning atrip to Belize, you might be wondering if it’s a safe destination. We know that bad things can happen anywhere, but are they more or less likely to happen in Belize?

Belize is a safe country, but it has some high-risk areas. Belize City can be dangerous. You should stay alert and use sensible precautions when you’re in the city, avoid traveling there at night and stay out of certain neighborhoods.

Most of the crime you’ll encounter in tourist areas involves theft, pickpocketing, swindling and extortion. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

It’s a good idea to use your credit cards instead of traveling with large amounts of cash. Be extremely cautious about sharing details of your trip, itinerary, hotel room or other personal information with strangers.

Use Common Sense at the Beach and Beyond

If you’re in a popular tourist area, don’t leave your clothes or belongings unattended on the beach. It’s common for thieves to target unwary beachgoers.
Don’t overindulge in alcohol. Doing so can make you less aware of what’s happening around you and more vulnerable to criminals.

Safety Tips While Traveling and Touring

When you’re traveling around Belize, be careful with your transportation choices. Don’t get into an unmarked car or illegal taxi. The safest way to travel around Belize is with an official, government-registered taxi service, a tour company or your hotel’s transportation service.

This is especially true if you’re visiting isolated, rural areas. Go with a group and make sure you’re with a professional local guide.

Guard Your Health

Belize is a clean country, but you should take sensible precautions with the following.

Sunshine. If you’re not used to hot, tropical climates, you may not be prepared for how strong the sun is. Make sure you wear a hat, bring sunscreen and limit your exposure during the hottest part of the day.
Mosquitoes. Yes, we have tropical bugs. Bring insect repellent.
Water. The tap water in Belize is safe to drink.
Diseases. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends getting vaccinated for hepatitis A and typhoid before traveling to Central America.
