Working as a Volunteer in Belize - Everything You Need To Know

Working as a Volunteer in Belize

Service Vacations and Volunteering in Belize

Volunteering during your vacation is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in a new country. If you want a truly fulfilling travel experience, consider a vacation that combines volunteer work with a trip to Belize.

Why You Should Consider a Volunteer Vacation in Belize

  • You can make a major impact. Belize is a small country, and even a small intervention can make a big impact. Few volunteer opportunities give you the same chance to see your results up close.
  • There are many different options. In Belize, you can help protect some of the earth’s most precious, rare ecosystems. Your work might affect organic, small-scale farming. You can also help indigenous Belizeans in rural areas get the medical treatment or school supplies their communities need.
  • Belize is a beautiful, fascinating country. Wild, unspoiled Belize is a unique destination. The Belizeans are warm, friendly people who treasure their country’s natural resources and cultural diversity.

Is Volunteering a Way to Travel for Free?

No, it’s not. In some cases, you’ll pay a fee that covers your lodging, board, and training. In others, your room, training, and board may be provided, but you’ll have to pay for transportation and incidental expenses.

Find the Right Opportunities

You can find volunteer opportunities by contacting nonprofit organizations in Belize that accept volunteers. Check out their fees and requirements, and submit an application before you make your travel plans.

You could also travel with a church group, mission trip, school group, or government organization that brings volunteers to Belize.

Organizations That Accept Volunteers

  • Belize Audubon Society: This is the oldest conservation group in Belize. It manages many protected areas in Belize and hires qualified volunteers who have experience in tourism development, park management, and conservation.
  • Hillside Healthcare: Doctors, nurses, and medical students are invited to help train Belizean healthcare professionals who provide care to people in rural southern Belize. If you have more basic healthcare training, the Belize Red Cross and International Red Cross accept volunteers.
Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center: This zoo and wildlife sanctuary hires volunteers to do outreach and education in the community. Volunteers must pay a weekly fee and apply for a spot two months in advance of their arrival.
  • Plenty Belize: A sister organization to Plenty International, this organization is based in Belize’s rural Toledo District. It offers training in micro-enterprises, farming, school gardens, and other projects to Maya and Garifuna communities. Volunteers must pay their own expenses.
  • WWOOF Belize: This organization offers free room and board in exchange for working on an organic farm. If you like hard work and can tolerate doing it in hot, humid conditions, this could be an affordable way to see Belize up close.

Make a Difference

Volunteering is a great way to help others while enhancing your own self-worth and sense of belonging. Service vacationing allows you to give back to a beautiful, vibrant country and its people.
