Belize has six districts. Before deciding where you’d like to live, visit each area. The districts include: Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize, Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo.

Climate

If you have lived in a climate other than tropical, you’ll probably notice Belize’s mild climate right away. You can trade your winter wardrobe for shorts, swimsuits, and flip-flops.

Health Care

Belize City has very good health care. Many of your prescription drugs are sold over the counter and are much less expensive than in the U.S.

Diversity

The local people of Belize are very friendly. Their backgrounds vary from different regions. You’ll find Mayans and Spanish are two cultures predominantly found here.

Pets

To bring your pet to Belize, you’ll need a permit and your veterinarian’s clean bill of health ten days before you arrive in Belize. After you arrive, just show your permit and you’ll be free to take your pet anywhere.

Cost of Living

Compared to the U.S., the cost of living in Belize is quite a bit less. If you are living on a fixed income, you should be able to live very comfortably. Orchid Bay is an example of a new community with new construction. You’ll find both villas and condominiums in a beautiful setting in the Corozal District.

Schools

Many schools are modeled after the British system and are run by churches. There are some private schools available and one main university, The University of Belize.

Bugs

Bugs come with tropical climates. Mosquitoes and sand fleas are found in most areas. Just make sure you have bug spray on hand.

Local Culture

Belizeans tend to be very laid back. You’ll learn not to be in a hurry. Just relax and everything will fall into place.

Food

Local Belizean favorites are rice, beans, stewed chicken, and seafood. Lobster season is from mid-June to mid-February.

Getting around

There are only a few main roads in Belize. Small cars are typically found on the mainland, with golf carts used by many of the resorts.

Language

Most Belizeans speak good English, but there are still those who speak some Spanish and Belizean Creole.

Government

It’s a Constitutional Monarchy and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.

There are no large chain stores, but plenty of small grocery stores and other shops. It’s easy to have something shipped to you from the states.

Holidays

Holidays are very festive with Christmas lasting the entire month of December.
