If Belize is on your travel bucket list for this year, there’s a new update you’ll want to know about. Starting from August 1st, the Caribbean paradise is raising one of its airport fees by a whopping 100% for international visitors. This fee hike is as per a newly enacted statutory instrument.
Here’s what you need to know: The “Belize Airports Authority Airport Development and Passenger Service Fees”, which was initially pegged at $18, has now been bumped up to $36. It’s a substantial increase that could make your departure from Belize a tad bit pricier.
This change means that tourists exiting Belize will now need to shell out approximately 147 Belize dollars in total fees. This fee adjustment is part of a broader strategy to finance a new $264-million revamp of the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA). The plan, announced by the Cabinet back in March, is to fund these exciting enhancements through changes in the non-Belizean airport development fee.
With the newly increased fee, the government hopes to make a significant stride towards this ambitious goal. However, the uptick in airport fees may have a slight ripple effect on your travel costs to Belize. As you chart out your journey to this tropical haven, make sure to account for these enhanced fees in your travel budget.
So, while the augmented fee may be a little bit of a bummer, don’t let it dampen your spirit. Belize, with its stunning beaches, majestic Maya ruins, and vibrant local culture, promises an experience worth every penny!
