DALLAS, Texas – Belize (0-0-1, 0 points) head coach Leroy Sherrier Lewis is confident that his team is ready to square off against Guatemala (1-0-0, 3 points) on Sunday.
The sides will meet at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, for the second day of play in the Central American Cup (CCA).
In the Wednesday openers for each, Belize fell to Honduras (2-0) after conceding a pair of own-goals, while Guatemala topped El Salvador (2-1) on the strength of a Marco Pappa brace.
“We played against a World Cup team, one of the largest in the area with vast technical expertise and quality,” said Sherrier in reference to the Hondurans.
And now the Belizeans will go up against their neighbors, who have won three straight games, including friendlies against Nicaragua and Cuba.
In the CCA’s 2013 edition, on its way to a semifinal place and a CONCACAF Gold Cup berth, Belize played Guatemala to a scoreless draw.
“We are well prepared to face a great opponent,” Sherrier Lewis expressed. “We know that Guatemala has improved a lot. I like very much the team’s make-up and the youth of its players.”
When asked about the tactics he plans to use against Guatemala, the Costa Rican was guarded with his response.
“That’s part of the secret,” Sherrier Lewis finished. “Belize is going to practice organized football, be respectful of the opponent and will give a fight. We know that we’re going up against a very strong opponent, against a good team, but we’re going to battle.”
