Is Belize the Next Great Spot? Listen and find out.
Belize, The Next Great Spot
For many years, Belize has been a popular destination for Europeans, Americans, and Canadians to retire or invest in a second home. The fabulous weather, pristine nature, and abundance of quality home sites has made Belize an attractive alternative to places like Florida and Arizona. Even better, Belize does not impose either income tax or property taxes, allowing retirees to retain control of their financial destiny.
Many people decide to move to Belize after coming to the country on vacation. Whether it’s a trip out to the reef for snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving, and sailing or explorations in the interior, hiking through rain forests, wildlife and bird spotting in the jungles, and visiting ancient Maya sites, there’s a lot to do and see in Belize. An outdoor life suits retirees, getting plenty of fresh air without ever having to worry about ice, snow, and cold winters.
The government of Belize makes it very easy to get permanent residency in the country. The QRP program allows qualifying individuals over age 45 to import all personal goods, including cars, boats, and light aircraft, completely tax and duty-free. Best of all, if one person qualifies for the QRP program, spouses and children can enjoy all of the benefits too, including permanent residency status.
The government of Belize allows retirees to continue to operate businesses as long as they’re not inside the territorial limits of the country. Retirees can collect business income, personal income, government benefits, and other sources of revenue without any obligation to pay taxes to the government of Belize. Strong laws on banking privacy and corporate holdings make it very simple and secure for retirees to manage their own financial concerns.
Unlike in the other countries in the region, the official language of Belize is English. Not only does this make getting around and talking to the locals easier, but you’ll never need a translator to understand property deeds, contracts, and paperwork. Belize has a judicial system inherited from the British. Property rights are respected, and there are absolutely no restrictions on foreigners owning, buying, and selling property.
The recent boom in vacationers heading to Belize has led to more options and better prices on flights to and from Belize and North America. Airlines like Southwest, American, United, Delta, and WestJet fly from major cities across North America and more routes have been announced. Add in low-cost flights from Cancun just across the border in Mexico, and it’s easy to stay in touch with loved ones, do business, or receive health care in the United States and Canada.
