The sleepy seaside town of Corozal might just seem like another inland destination among locals, but potential retirees are now looking at Corozal Town in a different light after it was recently named one of the world’s top retirement destinations for 2023.
In fact, Corozal Town was graded at B+ by Live and Invest Overseas, a leading online resource magazine for people who want to live, retire and invest overseas, in its annual index of the 10 best places to retire in the world. The selection was made by world-renowned author and overseas retirement expert Kathleen Peddicord who selected the destinations based on as many as 13 factors. Her listing provides retirees with specific information to aid them in making an informed decision, during such a critical stage in their lives.
In her publication, Peddicord indicated that Corozal Town had made the selection as an up-and-coming part of Belize that offers a rare combination of oceanfront living (on the Caribbean), paired with a low cost of living. She pointed out that while infrastructure is still in its development phase the town has amenities like supermarkets, hardware stores, bars, and restaurants. She also told retirees that the fact that Corozal is located less than 10 miles away from Chetumal, provides residents with the opportunity to travel across the border to a much bigger city with big box stores, that have access to American brands, and high-quality health and dental care, if needed. Peddicord also praised the fact that apart from being geographically close to the United States, Belize is an English-speaking country with easy residency options for retirees.
With talks of recession and uncertainties in the market right now, Peddicord reiterated that this year’s retirement index and decisions are the most critical ones yet and that she, “hopes that individuals who are looking to retire soon or make an investment to further their financial security, use this list as a stepping stone to start their next phase in life.”
Belize came in at number five, with countries such as Panama, Portugal, Colombia, and Cyprus snagging the top four spot, but not before ranking out countries such as Spain, Mexico, France, Indonesia, and others. Destinations were ranked based on cost of living, health care, entertainment, recreation, language, infrastructure, geographical location, environmental factors, crime, real estate restrictions, residency, taxes, and whether it is an expat community.
The go-slow and easy-going town of Corozal is situated in the northern portion of Belize and is best known for its idyllic lifestyle and growing expatriate community, which is mostly concentrated in the northern tip of the town. Corozal is a base for fishing excursions, birds and wildlife viewing, tours of the nearby nature reserves and Maya ruins as well as day trips to neighboring Chetumal Mexico.
