Do You Know the Way to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye?

Do You Know the Way to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye?
SunBreeze Suites in Ambergris Caye Belize

Have you ever wanted to book a vacation in paradise , but your budget says no? You may not be looking in the right place. Head for Belize where the mainland and hundreds of outlying islands are beautiful, fun and affordable–particularly if you stay at Ambergris Caye’s SunBreeze Suites in San Pedro town where seasonal discounts and packages are always wallet-pleasing.

But before you can explore San Pedro in Ambergris Caye you must get here. You’ll be offered two choices if you talk with travel experts: Either fly or boat from Belize City to Ambergis Caye. At first, price disparities between the two may seem formidable, but you could be surprised if you look closer.

Is flying your choice? If you’re coming to Ambergris Caye directly from the U.S., sort out your ticket to Belize City from North America first because this is Belize’s international hub. From there, catch a flight to Ambergris Caye that will set you back around $70 USD one way, unless you find a discount.

According to travel website TripAdvisor.com (where you can register to be notified if prices drop on Belize City/San Pedro flights!), multiple, daily nonstop flights cover the 34 mile distance on Maya Island Air or Tropic Air, small airlines servicing this hop. Most direct flights leave at around 17:40 MDT; all of them get you to San Pedro in 15 minutes.

But if you dislike small aircraft with single, turboprop engines, move on to your other option: Take a boat to cover that 34 mile distance in 90 minutes while enjoying the leisurely ride. There are other benefits to taking a water taxi to San Pedro: the Caribbean Sea is gorgeous, you just may see dolphins, boat crews are friendly and on-time arrival times are good.

On average, you’ll spend $20 USD for a one-way ride or $35 USD for a round trip, but you’ll make the trip an adventure. No matter when you arrive in Belize City, you can get to Ambergris Caye by boat during the day time, but factor in a cost not everyone mentions: it costs around $25 for the cab ride from the airport to the dock, so keep that in mind. If you’re curious about schedules, the staff at SunBreeze Suites can provide you with the schedules and they can also book your flight. (SunBreeze Suites also offers land transfer which they can coordinate with you.)

Having booked the ideal lodging at Sun Breeze Suites and run the transport gauntlet, your next job is figuring out what you don’t want to do in San Pedro, because we can assure you that it can take weeks to do and see everything! Arrange tours, attractions and excursions with the SunBreeze Suites team and they’re happy to make recommendations if you have a long list of “must-sees” but little time to do it all.

If you’re interested in top tourist picks, your budget won’t keep you from taking two of the most popular: a three hour Belize Hol Chan Marine Reserve/Shark Ray Alley snorkel tour or a three hour sunset sail run less than $68 each and it won’t cost you a cent more to hang out around the poolside, sun deck or sandy seafront of the SunBreeze Suites or to roam Ambergris Caye beaches and browse San Pedro shops during your affordable stay.
