Fort George Belize has joined the Autograph Collection, Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of independent hotels, marking a new chapter for the landmark waterfront property in Belize City’s historic Fort George neighborhood.
The move puts the hotel in front of a global audience while keeping the local character that has long defined it. Guided by a concept the hotel calls “Heritage in Motion,” the property is pairing modern hospitality with experiences that connect guests to Belize City, its people and its history.
A new tower on the waterfront
Fort George currently has 64 rooms and suites and will grow to 130 with the opening of its Signature Sea View Tower later this fall. The tower adds 66 rooms and suites, including two Signature Sea View Penthouses, all designed to take in views of Belize City and the Caribbean Sea.
Designed by Arguelles Architects, the tower draws on Belize’s coastal landscape, with large windows, natural textures, warm woods and locally inspired artwork.
New places to eat, drink and relax
Marea, a new Mediterranean inspired restaurant, will join the hotel’s existing restaurant, The Treehouse. A new lobby will be anchored by The George, serving specialty coffee by day and cocktails made with Belizean botanicals and ingredients by night.
The expansion also brings a new waterfront swimming pool and a retail boutique, adding to existing amenities including K’IN Spa, BurnBox Gym and the Courtyard Plunge Pool.
More room for meetings and events
Two new event spaces are on the way: Lubaantun, a boardroom with an outdoor deck, and The Canopy Terrace, a fourth floor venue with panoramic views of the city and the sea. Together they add about 4,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. They join the existing Lord Ashcroft Centre, which offers 6,815 square feet of flexible space for up to 500 guests, positioning the hotel for larger conferences, incentive groups and weddings.
Art and storytelling throughout
Historical images of Belize City and its waterfront will hang alongside contemporary works inspired by Belize and the Caribbean. Selected pieces will feature QR codes that let guests learn about their cultural and historical background.
A global platform for Belize City
Ricardo Echeverri, Marriott International’s Vice President of Owner and Franchise Services for the Caribbean and Latin America, said Fort George reflects Belize City’s history, culture and spirit, “delivering an experience that could exist nowhere else in the world.”
Scott McArdle, Vice President of Hospitality, called the move an important milestone. “Joining the Autograph Collection represents an important milestone in the evolution of Fort George, allowing us to introduce the property to a broader global audience while preserving the individuality and sense of place that have always defined it,” he said.
As part of Marriott Bonvoy, members can now earn and redeem points at Fort George, which offers easy access to the Belize Barrier Reef, ancient Maya sites and rainforest adventures across the country.
