TripAdvisor Gives Top Ratings to San Ignacio and Ambergris Caye

TripAdvisor, the world’s most popular travel website, has recently ranked two destinations in Belize as must-see locations in 2017. Based on an aggregate of the reviews and recommendations provided by its millions of users, TripAdvisor has listed the island of Ambergris Caye and San Ignacio Town in Belize as top 25 destinations to visit in Central America.

Ambergris Caye is the largest island in Belize, measuring more than 25 miles from north to south. Originally connected to the mainland, Ambergris Caye become an island when the ancient Maya dug a large channel to improve fishing in the area. A top destination for modern tourists, Ambergris Caye and its capital of San Pedro are home to numerous resorts, hotels, seafood restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues. The laid-back atmosphere and colorful historic buildings of San Pedro first gained international fame following the release of Madonna’s 1986 hit single “La Isla Bonita.”

Beyond the appeal of its beautiful beaches and pristine wetland areas on the northern half of the island, Ambergris Caye is especially popular with visitors due to its proximity to key areas of the Belize Barrier Reef, including the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, and the nearby island of Caye Caulker. Natural channels in the reef and shallow water depth of the Caribbean near Ambergris Caye make the area ideal for activities like snorkeling, fishing, and scuba diving.

San Ignacio Town is located in the western part of mainland Belize and is considered the eco-tourism capital of the country due to its strategic proximity to some of the most popular national parks, nature reserves, and pristine wild areas. By population, San Ignacio is the second biggest urban area in the country following Belize City, and is home to a popular open air market where farmers and artisans come from all parts of Belize to socialize and market their wares.

San Ignacio is also a popular staging point to explore nearby ancient Maya sites including Cahal Pech, a hillside area just minutes from downtown San Ignacio that was built for Maya nobles. Other nearby Maya sites include the enormous ruins of Caracol and Xunantunich that once battled with Tikal (now just across the border in modern Guatemala) for domination of the region.
