West Fest Comes to Cayo
On September 15, 2018, San Ignacio’s Macal River Park will host the first-ever West Fest designed to showcase businesses, artists, and products from around Belize’s Cayo District. Organized by the Cayo Chapter of the Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA), West Fest will be an exciting, fun-filled family event designed to celebrate the more than 3,000 years of history, culture, food, and music of San Ignacio, Santa Elena, and the entire Cayo District region.
Doors will open at 9:00 AM sharp on September 15 and West Fest will run all day until 5:00 PM. The entrance fee for adults and older children is $2 but kids aged 8 and younger can enjoy West Fest for no charge. The majority of events and areas of the festival are designed to be family-friendly with no alcohol served, but one section will be reserved for wine tasting and other adult beverages.
A lot of local businesses have already booked a booth at the brand-new West Fest, but there is still space remaining. West Fest will be operating as an environmentally friendly event with a complete ban on plastic and Styrofoam utensils, cups, and plates, so attendees are strongly encouraged to bring their own cups and reusable bags. Several food and drink vendors will be on hand with lots of delicious treats that represent the culinary heritage of Cayo District.
Currently, Cayo is the only one of Belize’s six districts that does not hold an annual expo, something that the BTIA is hoping to ameliorate with the new West Fest, which the BITA is hoping will become a popular annual event. BTIA will also be hosting a raffle event during West Fest with prizes totaling more than $60,000. Raffle tickets will be sold separately for BZ$25 per ticket. Some of the profits generated by West Fest will go towards buying equipment for the San Ignacio Police and community upliftment projects.
