On September 27th, Belize will take a prominent role in the global travel and hospitality industry as it hosts the inaugural World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards (WSTHA) at the historic Cahal Pech Archaeological Reserve in San Ignacio Town. This exciting event, closely linked to the prestigious World Travel Awards, aims to recognize the individuals and organizations at the forefront of sustainable tourism worldwide.
Cahal Pech, one of Belize’s most iconic Maya sites, dating back to 1,200 BC, has been chosen as the perfect venue for this landmark occasion. According to Justin Cooke, Executive Vice-President of WSTHA, the choice of venue reflects the essence of sustainable tourism. “Excitement is building ahead of our inaugural ceremony in Belize. Cahal Pech represents the harmony between cultural heritage and sustainable tourism, making it the ideal setting to honor those protecting our planet,” said Cooke.
Glenn Mandziuk, CEO of the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, emphasized the importance of this event in setting new benchmarks for the industry. “The World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards are not only about celebrating those who lead in sustainability but also about raising the bar for the entire sector. We are excited to spotlight the leaders who are driving the shift towards Net Positive Hospitality,” said Mandziuk.
Belize’s own Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, expressed his pride as the final touches are being made for the awards ceremony. “We’re putting the final details in place as we prepare to host this incredible event at Cahal Pech. As the oldest-known Maya site in Belize, Cahal Pech provides a stunning and meaningful backdrop for recognizing those making a difference in sustainability,” Mahler said.
Minister Mahler also extended his appreciation to the participants in the 21 award categories, each contributing to the future of sustainable tourism. “We are excited to welcome all the nominees and celebrate their achievements while also showcasing Belize’s own sustainable tourism efforts to a global audience,” he added.
With just days to go, Belize is ready to take the global stage, bringing attention not only to its rich cultural heritage but also to its commitment to leading sustainable tourism efforts. The World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards are sure to leave a lasting impression on the international travel and hospitality landscape, with Belize as the proud host.
