14 Ways to Experience Belize

If you’re in search of a vacation spot that combines world-class beaches, a glorious natural landscape amid a mighty jungle, famous ancient ruins, and a unique local culture – Belize (on the south-west corner of the Yucatan Peninsula) has more charm and treasure than anyone can possibly experience in a single visit.

But we hope this short list of Belizean national treasures will help you organize your visit to this equatorial paradise.

Saturdays at the San Ignacio Market

Visit the San Ignacio Market on any given Saturday to find it in full swing with a plethora of fresh fruits, meat and local delicacies as well as unique clothing and jewelry. See musicians perform for the crowd. Observe as the locals meet and mingle at a place and time when feelings of community ride high.

Pamper yourself in Luxury

If being pampered in an exotic luxury resort appeals to you, there are few better destinations in Belize than Chabil Mar. This award-winning resort was named Fodor’s ‘Choice for Luxury’ award. And they easily earn it with world-class accommodations and services located conveniently within the beautiful Placencia village.

See the Belize Zoo

See exotic animals representing over 45 distinct native species. It is the first nature destination in Belize to be fully wheelchair accessible. See the powerful and elusive Jaguar, the mischievous Black Howler Monkey, and the Scarlet Macaw. They have VIP tours, educational programs and a unique Jungle lodge for a vacation experience like no other.

Meet the Belizean People

So much is unique about the people and history of this, possibly least-well-known, nation on the Yucatan Peninsula. This former British colony has close ties with the U.S. and Europe and is home to a hospitable and festive people.

Enjoy the Beaches of the Placencia

The iconic Placenia Village is skirted by tropical beaches that range from white-sandy, to rustic shrub-bearing, to dock side vistas. Dotted with islands and bristling with life and culture, one can imagine living one’s whole life here and be fulfilled. Truly, there is no lack of natural beauty or variety.

Taste Belizean Cuisine

An amalgamation of culinary traditions from Mexico and perhaps a dozen or more south American nations, there’s enough variety, culture and innovation in Belizean food to challenge the world’s finest. Some of their most unique dishes are based on rice & beans with stew, and Belize’s own Chicken and Potato salad, which alone justifies the trip.

Enjoy Belizean Rum

No less unique than Puerto Rican Spiced Rum, Belize rum has a character all its own. Belize is home to two favorites of Rum connoisseurs, One Barrel, and Caribbean Rum.

Visit Mayan Ruins

No visit to the south-west quadrant of the globe can be complete without paying a visit to the Mayan Ruins of Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, and Caracol. View these ancient stone structures, learn about their history and tour the surrounding area after seeing it all in panorama from the apex of one of these breathtaking timeless structures.

Visit the Cayes

Two famous islands lay off the coast of this beautiful tropical country; Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye. The small limestone and coral island, Caye Caulker, is home to a pristine village 20 miles off the coast. The Ambergris Caye is the largest Belizean island. It is partially untouched by development, and is made largely of a ring of perfect white sand.

Dive and Snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef

The largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere keeps its interior ecologically isolated from the greater Atlantic. Diving and Snorkeling enthusiasts flock year round to this Mecca of diversity of aquatic wildlife and color. It is especially famous for the unique feeding behaviors of the whale shark.

Take a Helicopter Tour with Astrum

Astrum Helicopters offers aerial adventures, transfers, and charters. Whether you’re on a vacation, running a film crew, or only wish to observe this tropical jewel from the air, Astrum can accommodate you.

Go Cave Tubing

Experience some of the world’s most magnificent river cave networks in the most relaxed and festive way possible, on an inner tube tour. Belize Cave Tubing offers tubing adventures through a number of beautiful routes. See Mayan Ruins from the water, observe a verdant jungle from the waterline and move from way-point to the next on exciting zip-line adventures.

Hike the Belizean Rainforest

Encounter the rainforest up close and personal. Hear the call of the Scarlet Macaw and perchance spot the strange and wonderful Kinkajou. And discover an ancient temple as you push through the vines under a lush canopy.

Canoe a Jungle River

Paddle down the grand Macal or Mopan rivers in a traditional canoe. Tour these majestic waterways casually or join in the great local tradition of river racing adventure in their annual La Ruta Maya river challenge!
