Belize Archaeology

The countdown to one of Belize’s biggest and most engaged archeological symposiums has officially commenced and with only a couple more hours to spare, it is an ideal time to decide whether you would want to be a participant in the return of the 2022 Belize Archaeological Symposium, after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

As has been customary, the event will be hosted at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in San Ignacio Cayo, thereby providing participants with space and comfort, within which they can unwind and learn about the rise and fall of the ancient Maya Civilization and other archeological topics in Belize. The event which has attracted hundreds of participants and guest speakers over its 18 years of being formed will be hosted from June 29th to July 01, 2022.

Registrations can be done from as early as 7:30 a.m. daily and will be free for students with a valid ID card, $10 BZ for residents, and $20 BZ for non-residents. Those interested in being a part of this year’s activities are being reminded that all covid protocols such as regular sanitization, social distancing, and mask-wearing will be enforced for the safety of all.

The session will promote and fosters research in areas such as Maya, Colonial, Underwater, and Cave archeology as well as in the Archaic, Paleo Indian, and Historic periods in Belize. The event is set against a backdrop that promotes interactive discussion, among archeologists, students, tour guides, and other aficionados, to exchange ideas and discuss their current research and latest developments in archeology with each other.

Over the three-day event 34 presentations, sliced into half hours slots and divided into a 20-minute PowerPoint and lecture-style presentation will be hosted. That will be supported by a 10-minute question and answer session so that guests and participants can engage with the presenters.

The event is being hosted by the Institute of Archeology.
