The Belize Birding Festival Returns in 2023

After a three-year hiatus due to the global pandemic, the Belize Birding Festival is finally set to return on October 7th, 2023, in Belize City. A much-anticipated event for ornithologists and bird enthusiasts alike, this festival has traditionally brought people from around the world to Belize—a veritable Eden for birdwatchers.

As reported by the Belize Audubon Society, Belize is home to over 593 distinct bird species, including the keel-billed toucan (the nation’s national bird), the harpy eagle, Lesson’s motmot, the endangered jabiru stork, and the vibrant scarlet macaw. Remarkably, 20 percent of these birds are North American migrants, flying thousands of miles to grace Belize’s lush forests with their vibrant colors and exotic calls.

With the country’s extensive forest cover, birders can sometimes spot up to 50 different species on a single outing, and in excess of 200 on a longer trip. This rich biodiversity is a testament to Belize’s commitment to conservation, with a significant portion of the country designated as national parks, wildlife reserves, and marine reserves.
