Travelers heading to Belize’s deep south have their air link back. Maya Island Air is now flying to Punta Gorda, keeping the Toledo District connected after Tropic Air abruptly ended its service to the southern town.
Prime Minister John Briceño said Tropic Air announced the cut without notice, and while he acknowledged the airline had been losing money on the route, he said its management never approached the government before pulling out. “We’re happy to announce that Maya Island Air has agreed to take on that route, so you can go online and start to buy tickets,” he said. “The tourists that are visiting, they don’t have to worry, there’s going to be a flight going down south.”
How the deal works
The government is not paying Maya Island Air a subsidy. Instead, it has agreed to provide duty free diesel to the airline. The government is also expected to assist with a hangar and terminal building in Punta Gorda, along with tourism marketing for the destination.
Why it matters for travelers
Punta Gorda is the gateway to Toledo, Belize’s least visited and most culturally rich district. Without air service, reaching it means a long drive from Belize City. A short flight puts the region within easy reach, even on a shorter vacation.
What to see in Toledo
Toledo rewards travelers who make the trip. Explore the ancient Maya sites of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit, swim through Blue Creek Cave, and cool off at Rio Blanco National Park. Visit a family cacao farm to see chocolate made from bean to bar, and spend time in Maya and Garifuna villages where traditions remain part of daily life.
Offshore, the Port Honduras Marine Reserve and the Sapodilla Cayes offer quiet snorkeling, fishing and island hopping, far from the crowds of the north.
Plan your trip
Tickets for Maya Island Air’s Punta Gorda service are available online now. With high season approaching, book flights and accommodations early to secure your preferred dates, and consider pairing Toledo with Placencia or the Cayo District for a trip that covers the reef, the rainforest and the deep south in one journey.
