Air service to Punta Gorda is back on track. Maya Island Air has agreed to take over the southern route dropped by Tropic Air, and the government is backing the move with fuel concessions and infrastructure support.
Prime Minister John Briceño said the situation began when Tropic Air announced, without notice, that it would stop flying to Punta Gorda. He acknowledged the airline had been losing money on the route but said management never approached the government to discuss the problem before pulling out.
“So it was sudden,” Briceño said. “We’re happy to announce that Maya Island Air has agreed to take on that route, so you can go online and start to buy tickets.”
Asked whether Maya Island Air would receive a subsidy, the Prime Minister said no, explaining that the government has instead agreed to provide duty free diesel to the airline.
The support goes beyond fuel. The government is also expected to assist with a hangar and terminal building in Punta Gorda, along with tourism marketing for the southern destination.
For travelers planning trips to Toledo, the message from the Prime Minister was clear: “The tourists that are visiting, they don’t have to worry, there’s going to be a flight going down south.”
Tickets for Maya Island Air’s Punta Gorda service are now available online.
