This Belize Island Is the Perfect Tropical Year-round Getaway

If you went online and searched for images of an idyllic tropical island, chances are that you’ll find photos of Tobacco Caye. In Belize, islands are known as cayes (pronounced “keys”), and one of the most beautiful is Tobacco Caye. With soft, white, sandy beaches, lovely palm trees swaying in the breeze, and the clear blue waters of the Caribbean stretching in every direction, Tobacco Caye is a true jewel of an island.

Measuring approximately five acres (two hectares) in size, Tobacco Caye is a small island located in the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, a protected conservation area on the Belize Barrier Reef. The South Water Caye Marine Reserve is an enormous 17,000-acre (7,000-hectare) area of the reef that is home to some of the best spots for scuba diving, snorkeling, and fishing.

To protect and preserve the beauty of Tobacco Caye, there are only a limited number of lodgings. Just six cabanas are located on the island, each with a beautiful over the water deck. All of the cabanas face north towards the reef, giving visitors an astoundingly picturesque and unobstructed view of the Caribbean Sea.

Each cabin comes with a private bathroom and a lovely hammock on the deck from which to enjoy the views. In order to protect the environment, all of the buildings on Tobacco Caye are “green” and “off-the-grid”, using natural, sustainable sources of energy. All the electricity on the island comes from solar power, and water is sustainably harvested from natural rainfall.

Tobacco Caye comes complete with everything you’ll need to enjoy an unforgettable vacation in Belize, including meals, housekeeping service, wireless internet (for a small additional fee), and a full complement of kayaking, snorkeling, diving, and stand-up paddling equipment. And while there’s no air conditioning on the island, refreshing sea breezes and fans will keep you comfortable and refreshed. And few experiences can compare to enjoying a meal on your own private dock while gazing out over the water.

If you’re interested in visiting the idyllic island of Tobacco Caye and other locations on the reef, book your tour with Island Expeditions. For over 30 years, Island Expeditions has taken visitors to some of the most picturesque and unspoiled areas of Belize.

Island Expeditions also specializes in guided nature adventures on the mainland, cultural visitors to traditional villages, and island-hopping adventures along the reef. No one knows the hidden byways, secret jungle spots, and the islands of the reef better than Island Expeditions.
