The Belize Destination with the Best Quality of Life for Expats

The Belize Destination with the Best Quality of Life for Expats

For many people considering retirement or moving abroad, Belize can seem like the promised land. But, in reality, moving to Belize is now easier than ever before.

Belize has a well-established community of expats who enjoy Belize’s balmy weather, gorgeous beaches, and more modern infrastructure than anywhere else in the world, one of the reasons why both the AARP and International Living Magazine have recommended Belize as a top destination for retirees and expats.

For many people considering moving abroad, it’s normal to have a lot of questions about Belize. To that end, we’ve prepared a few answers to the most commonly ask questions.

Where Is the Best Place to Retire in Belize?

By far, the most popular choice is the country’s northern Corozal District. Located on the northeast coast and bordering the Mexican state of Quintana Roo (home to the resort town of Cancun), Corozal District is the perfect mix of small-town comfort and unspoiled nature.

Corozal receives less rain than the central and southern areas of Belize while simultaneously benefiting from cooler breezes that help keep insects and humidity at bay. Yet Corozal District also enjoys the same balmy, year-round weather that makes life in Belize so attractive.

Corozal Town, the capital of the district, has approximately 10,000 inhabitants. The center of town contains a lovely square lined with several shops, restaurants, and cafes. The town boasts one public library and several churches and is within a short distance of two ancient Maya sites. Located just 90 miles north of Belize City, getting to Corozal District is simple and easy.

Just outside of Corozal Town is the Bay of Chetumal which is just a short distance from the island of Ambergris Caye and access to the Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its scuba diving, sailing, water sports, snorkeling, and fishing opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Mexican town of Chetumal is only around 10 miles away. Home to familiar low-cost retailers like Walmart and Sam’s Club, the town also has several world-class healthcare facilities.
