GQ Recommends Belize as a Top Destination Visit This Winter
GQ Magazine, a leading purveyor of tastes and trends in culture, lifestyle, and travel, has just published an article recommending Belize over the nearby Yucatán coast in Mexico. GQ’s article laments the tired look and overcrowding of Mexican beach cities like Tulum and Cancún and recommends traveling a few miles south to Belize instead.
Mexico’s Yucatán coast has long been a popular destination for Americans and Canadians wanting to escape the ravages of winter, but political instability, an overstretched infrastructure, and too many skyrise hotels have made it less attractive. GQ now recommends visiting Belize as it’s only very sparsely populated, easy to get around, and the English-speaking populace is “famously friendly.” Belize measures just 70 miles wide by 120 miles long, making it possible to drive to just about anywhere in three hours or less. But as GQ rightly noted, for less than $100, visitors can take a short-hop flight (via domestic airlines Tropic Air or Maya Island Air) to just about anywhere in the country, including the offshore islands.
GQ regaled its readers with a luxury, hypothetic seven-day itinerary, but even short-term visitors have a plethora of exciting activities to choose from, including snorkeling and scuba diving on the reef, enjoying a tasting at a rum distillery, hiking through wilderness sanctuaries (where hundreds of jaguars still roam), or relaxing with a little fly-fishing or bird watching. Other options recommended by GQ include learning more about local cultures and sampling some of the delicious food in Belize which includes seafood (usually caught and served on the same day), organic produce, Caribbean spices, and Mexican-influenced dishes like tacos, escabeche soup, and tamales.
One of the top destinations recommended by GQ is the lovely Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize. Instead of towering chain hotels, Placencia has successfully maintained its idyllic fishing village feel with lots of lovely little shops, cafes, resorts, bars, and restaurants. Located close to both the reef and attractions on the mainland, it’s easy to see why Placencia is a top choice for international visitors.
