Southwest Begins Flying from Fort Lauderdale to Belize
As of June 4, 2017, Southwest Airlines, the world’s largest low-cost air carrier, has begun flying its new non-stop flight from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL) Airport to Belize City (BZE). The new Fort Lauderdale-Belize route is Southwest’s third non-stop flight to Belize. Beginning in 2015, Southwest has been flying non-stop to Belize from Houston’s Hobby Airport (HOU) and Southwest began flying from Denver (DIA) to Belize City on March 11, 2017.
Belizean Civil Aviation Minister Manuel Heredia and his department have worked hard to attract new routes to the country. Following substantial investments in infrastructure, all four of the biggest airlines in the United States now offer flights to Belize, including American Airlines, Delta, United, and Southwest. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has also worked with Canadian authorities. The first non-stop flights from Canada to Belize began operating earlier this year on WestJet Airlines and now Air Canada, the eighth-largest airline in the world, has announced it will begin flying from Toronto to Belize City beginning on December 15, 2017.
“I believe the time has come to expand the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City to accommodate all the new international flights that are coming into this country. The ministry has worked very hard to negotiate with American and Canadian airlines to make flying to Belize and enjoying a great vacation here more affordable. We welcome these new routes and look forward to making Belize a regional transportation hub,” said Manuel Heredia, the Minister of Civil Aviation in Belize.
“South Florida is a popular destination for Belizeans, both for the shopping and for the world-class health care. We are proud to open our new Fort Lauderdale to Belize flight that offers two free checked bags for every customer,” said Brad Hawkins, a spokesperson for Southwest Airlines.
The rising influx of travelers to Belize is a herald for the growing popularity of foreign investment in real estate in the country. Retirees and expats can now benefit from the Belizean government’s QRP program that offers the tax-free importation of personal goods (including vehicles) and freedom from being taxed on any income generated outside of Belize.
