Traveling during Covid-19 doesn’t have to be an irresponsible decision as long as you choose your destination wisely. Different countries have had different success safely opening their borders, but Belize ranks among the best. Thanks to their meticulous Safe Passage program, Belize opened fully for leisure travelers on October 1, 2020, and that process has continued smoothly since. And while that means there are some extra precautions you need to take when planning a trip, they aren’t as overbearing as you might think.
Plan Your Trip With the Belize Health App
Available on the App Store for iPhone users and as a third-party download for Android users, the Belize Health App is a necessity if you want to travel to the country. The forms here must be filled out 72 hours prior to your arrival in Belize, and it requires both documentation of your medical status as well as an acknowledgment that you’ve booked a room in a Gold Standard hotel. These accommodations are held to particularly high standards to ensure that they can accommodate guests from around the world while keeping the risk of infection minimal.
Presenting Your Proof of Testing Negative
If you’re coming to Belize by air, you’ll need to present proof that you’ve either received a Covid-19 immunization or tested negative. An official vaccine card that demonstrates that you’ve taken the single- or two-dose vaccine over two weeks ago will work in the former case. If you haven’t had the chance to receive a vaccination yet, you can just as easily present the results from a PCR fast test. These tests must be taken within 96 hours of travel. Just keep in mind that presenting the results of a test rather than an immunization may make you subject to a secondary check.
Even if you haven’t had a chance to take a test before leaving, you should be okay. New arrivals can take a Covid-19 test at the airport for $50. Just keep in mind that you’ll be required to quarantine for two weeks if you test positive when you arrive.
Enjoy Your Stay Safely
Belize’s tight restrictions and high standards for Gold Star businesses ensure that the risk of infection is low while visiting, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t exercise caution. Once you’ve been accepted for entry, continue to wear your mask and stay within the safe corridor zone. Exercising a little extra caution will help everyone safe and ensure that travel continues to be a viable option during the pandemic.
