Placencia Belize, the Must-Visit Caribbean Destination You’ve Never Heard Of
Residents and tour operators in Belize got another feather in their cap with the recent article published in Vogue magazine. One of the premier fashion and lifestyle magazines in the world, Vogue published an article entitled “The Must-Visit Caribbean Destination You’ve Never Heard Of” that lavished praise on the sleepy charm of the Placencia Peninsula.
Extolling the convenience of a short “puddle jumper” flight from the international airport in Belize City to the airstrip in Placencia, the Vogue article highlighted the peninsula’s strategic location between the Caribbean Sea and a mangrove-lined lagoon. Extolling the modest storefronts and abundant nature in Placencia Village, the Vogue article went on to recommend that its readers get to meet the culturally diverse inhabitants of the region, including American expats, Mestizos, and modern Maya.
Although not a surprise to anyone who lives in or has visited Placencia, the Vogue article praised the genuinely friendly attitude of the locals and the relaxing, laid-back Caribbean atmosphere. Referring to the country’s unofficial slogan of referring to everything as “un-Belize-able”, the Vogue article concluded by giving high marks for the variety and deliciousness of the local cuisine and the abundant adventure opportunities on both land and sea that are suitable for every type of traveler.
The Vogue article on Placencia recommended the Naïa Resort and Spa as a place to stay, however there are other top resorts to stay in the area such as Turtle Inn, The Placencia Hotel & Casino, Laru Beya, and Chabil Mar. Painting a beautiful picture, the article described the Naïa Resort and Spa as a cozy and intimate hotel where guests can wake to the soothing sounds of waves crashing against the shoreline and the sight of palm trees charmingly swaying in the wind.
Recommended tours mentioned in the Vogue article included exploring the family-run cacao farm of Ixcacao in Toledo District, diving with whale sharks in spring in the waters off of Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes Marine Reserve, and snorkeling at Laughing Bird Caye. Other top attractions recommended in the Vogue article include hiking in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and trying to spot jaguars and black howler monkeys as well as exploring Maya ruins like Nim Li Punit and Lubaantun.
The Vogue article also praised the variety and quality of food in Belize, especially fusion cuisine. Dining experiences such as grilled octopus, feta cheese and watermelon salad, coconut shrimp, curry cauliflower puree, lobster grilled cheese, fish and chips, and red curry snapper. Cocktails that were included in the Vogue article included a Jalapeno Grapefruit Margarita, Garden Quencher, watermelon mojitos, and a Spicy Cantaloupe Colada.
