The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) has unveiled a substantial $54 million “transformational bond” aimed at fostering the marketing of Belize as an appealing tourism destination, and advancing tourism infrastructure within the country.

In an interview with News 5 Belize, Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, Anthony Mahler, outlined the ambitious plan that will see the lion’s share of the funds funneled into a broad range of projects. These initiatives will target marketing to attract European and Mexican carriers and invest heavily in the critical infrastructure required to support an increase in tourism.

Mahler revealed that BTB is not only focusing on marketing strategies. In partnership with Florida International University, they are developing a dedicated training academy to nurture local talent and provide the necessary skillsets to the industry workforce.

A significant portion of the fund, however, will be dedicated to bolstering the nation’s infrastructure. “If you look, throughout the country you will see the infrastructure is not up to par to the natural assets that we have,” Mahler said. “So we need to have lights. We need to improve water, we need to improve waste management, we need to have marinas where people can dock their boats internationally and locally.”

The transformational bond also hints at an environmentally conscious strategy. Mahler disclosed ongoing discussions about establishing a rehabilitation center in Gales Point, in collaboration with the Clear Water Aquarium. The exact specifics of the center have yet to be announced, but it represents another facet of BTB’s ambitious, comprehensive strategy for sustainable tourism development.

Mahler noted that a committee would review and oversee the projects funded by the transformational bond, ensuring accountability and effectiveness in the allocation of the $54 million investment.

Belize, known for its captivating natural beauty, unique culture, and the iconic Great Blue Hole, is a gem of Central America. This investment by the Belize Tourism Board signals a significant commitment to improving the visitor experience while sustainably managing and promoting the rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage of the country.

The projects, once completed, are expected to bolster Belize’s standing in the international tourism scene, allowing it to compete with other destinations globally while also ensuring that tourism continues to be a sustainable source of income and employment for its residents.
