Discover the Magic of Butterfly Falls in Belize

Butterfly Falls in Belize

Belize is a land of many gorgeous waterfalls, and one of the most pristine and beautiful is Butterfly Falls. Located on privately-owned land inside of one of Belize’s biggest nature reserves, Butterfly Falls is known for its 80-feet high plunge of water into a gorgeous pool that attracts enormous clouds of colorful butterflies.

Why You Have to Do a Tour of Butterfly Falls

If you’ve ever imagined a perfect Hollywood setting of thundering water cascading into a clear pool of water ringed by lush foliage, then you’re imagining the unbelievable reality that is Butterfly Falls. Protected from the general public, Butterfly Falls is a shimmering cascade of natural beauty that truly looks like a slice of tropical paradise.

Where in Belize is Butterfly Falls Located?

Butterfly Falls is located inside the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize’s western Cayo District. Although it is inside the public nature reserve, the falls themselves are located on private property operated by the Hidden Valley Inn.

When is the Best Time to Tour Butterfly Falls

As a natural phenomenon, Butterfly Falls can be enjoyed all year round. Be aware, however, that it takes a vigorous 30-minute hike to get to the falls and may be difficult to access during or following heavy rainfall.

Best Way to Get to Butterfly Falls

Only guests of the Hidden Valley Inn located adjacent to Butterfly Falls can access the waterfall. The nearest landmark in the public section of the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is the Gaia Riverlodge Restaurant and Lounge. The popular Rio on Pools waterfall in the public section of the reserve is approximately 3.5 miles from Butterfly Falls.

Best Way to Experience Butterfly Falls

You’ll have to book a stay with the Hidden Valley Inn in order to experience the beauty of Butterfly Falls, but it’s doubtful that you’ll get a more perfectly composed photo of unspoiled nature anywhere else in Belize. Be prepared for a strenuous hike through dense rainforest terrain to get to the falls, so bring sturdy shoes, insect protection, and an abundant supply of drinking water. Once at the falls, it’s likely you’ll enter a deeply relaxed state listening to the gentle rumble of the water while marveling at the ethereal dance of white and blue butterflies as they flit through the air. Popular activities including taking a refreshing dip in the pool at the base of the falls, so be sure to pack a swimsuit and towel as well.
