For Adventure or Relaxation, Belize is Your Destination
Vacation doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone, and it doesn’t have to mean the same thing every year. Belize is one of those rare destinations that allow you to not just pivot from trip to trip but allows you to change the tone and the vibe from moment to moment. On one side sits the towering Maya Mountains and the lush jungles beneath. On the other sits the bright and sunny Caribbean. In between is both a world of adventures and a limitless variety of opportunities to relax. Let’s dig into both options.
Adventure
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest habitat of its kind in the world, and that’s naturally drawn the imagination of divers from all over the world. And you don’t need to literally be on the barrier reef to find cool wildlife and stunning geographic formations. No matter where you are along Belize’s coast, there are likely dozens of dive sites within reach. That’s not even taking into consideration the wealth of opportunities for playing with water toys like jet skis. Gladden Spit even offers the opportunity to swim with whale sharks from March into June. These docile giants need to be seen to be believed.
Adventure awaits once you reach the shore too. The Cayo District is essentially the country’s wild west, and adventure companies manage to turn the sprawling rainforest ecosystems into an obstacle course or an ecological theme park. From zip-lining over the rainforest canopies to tubing through the underwater channels of the Caves Branch River to dancing with the local Garifuna people in the coastal town of Seine Bight, the adventures can take you over, under, and all around the corners of this beautiful country.
Relaxation
The Belize Barrier Reef’s claim to fame as an adventure destination is legitimate, but the reef is worth exploring even if you’re looking to keep things more sedate. Smaller islands like the Silk Cayes or Laughing Bird Caye offer some great, shallow waters for snorkeling, letting you retreat to your own private stretch of beach to see the gorgeous marine life nearby. Or you can just kick up your legs in the sand with a good book. The beach resorts of Belize are usually stocked with a full spa, and they don’t skimp on amenities either.
But spas are also abundant throughout the Cayo District and in the coastal mainland. Eco-tourism is big here, and resorts and hotels are often integrated right into the environment. That makes it easy to commune with nature without having to rough it. If you have an enthusiasm for wildlife, why not take a cruise down the Monkey River or go looking for jaguars at Cockscomb Basin? Belize is also home to some of the most impressive and extant Maya ruins in the world.
