Nineteen-year-old Olympic sensation Simone Biles will be celebrated with a motorcade through the streets of Belize City, Belize this Thursday.

The gold-medal winning gymnast will be hosted in country courtesy the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), which extended an invitation to Biles and her teammates over the summer.

Simon Biles won four gold medals at the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janerio, Brazil representing the United States, however, she claims to be deeply connected to Belize. Apart from her athletic triumphs, Biles’ history and connection to the paradise oasis that is Belize became as much a part of headlines as her historic efforts in Rio.

Several American publications traveled to Belize to trace her roots and the humble beginnings of her grandmother, with whom Biles shares a close personal bond. Biles detailed her passion for the country in many interviews and said she could not wait to come back.

When BTB extended the invitation to Biles and her teammates, she gladly accepted. According to BTB, when she received the invitation she said: “My second home, you betta Belize we’re coming.” Biles will arrive along with her family on Thursday and will spend the Christmas holiday in Belize.

A press conference has been scheduled for Thursday just before the start of the motorcade at the Biltmore Hotel, where it will begin. Biles is expected to address the Belizean media and speak about her experience in Rio as well as her connection with the country, her plans while here, and what lies ahead for the young, talented gymnast.

The motorcade will begin at 4:00 p.m. local time and will make its way through a number of principal streets before ending at the Battlefield Park in downtown Belize City. It will also include representatives from various sporting associations in the country including athletes from a wide range of sports including volleyball, cycling, bodybuilding, martial arts, football and track and field. Several youth and women’s groups will also be in attendance. An official welcome ceremony will be held for Biles at the park. The event will include family entertainment and a welcome address.

The tourism board has frequently used Twitter as a medium for marketing, extending invitations to several celebrities including Steve Harvey and DJ Khaled over the past year. Biles, however, is the only one to have taken up the BTB on its offer. The BTB is hoping to promote Belize as a premier destination and travel choice through the venture.
