Simone Biles spends Christmas vacation in Summer bliss

Simone Biles Loves Belize

Since Olympic gymnast Simone Biles touched down in her self-proclaimed “second home” Belize last Thursday, many news outlets and travel blogs have taken note of the fact that her vacation resembles less of a chilly Christmas winter and more of a summer beach party.

Biles arrived in country last week with her family and was met with a warm welcome rivaling Belize’s toasty Christmas climate and a wave of local support. She was the highlight of a motorcade that made its way through the principal streets of Belize City. On-lookers came out to get a glimpse of the Olympic hero. She was welcomed by government officials, Belizean athletes and the general public at an official ceremony held at the Battlefield park.

Biles, in an interview with the Belizean media on Thursday, had said she intended to spend her Christmas vacation soaking in the sun and salt waters of the Caribbean sea. The dual American-Belizean citizen who delivered four gold medals in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janerio, Brazil has made good on that promise. Her Instagram account has given her followers a glimpse into the splendors of an ideal ocean paradise that is the perfect vacation destination all year round.

While many north Americans are bundled in layers of sweaters and coats trying desperately to avoid the winter chill, Biles’ Instagram posts show her frolicking around on the beach in two-piece bikinis enjoying the tropical Caribbean breeze, sea and sun. On Friday she posted a stunning aerial view of Belize’s barrier reef, the second largest in the world, where it meets with the deep blue ocean.

On Saturday she posted pictures swimming with sharks! They were nurse sharks, however, and pose absolutely no danger to humans. She also swam with sting rays and sea turtles. Belize is home to many snorkeling tours like these, which can be done at the Sting Ray Alley, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve or any of a number of world recognized snorkeling destinations across the country’s breath-taking coast. Biles also used the #BTB hashtag as a nod to the Belize Tourism Board (BTB), which invited her and her family for the vacation.

While Biles hasn’t said exactly where she is staying, it seems most likely she is enjoying her vacation at one of the world class resorts in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Many tourists and ex-pats flock to San Pedro for its tropical delights: the lazy laid back vibe, the colorful drinks, the sand between the toes, the beach bodies, the para-sailing, the snorkeling and diving and the freshly served daily seafood catches. It is understandable why Biles enjoys vacationing here, because it’s always summer in Belize.
