The ancient Royal Palace of Cahal Pech in San Ignacio was transformed into one of the most memorable settings on Monday night, to host the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they officially wrapped up their three-day tour of the country.
The Cahal Pech archeological site was taken back in time, as women in traditional Mayan wear and men donning ancient war attire stood erect awaiting the arrival of the Royals. Set in a colorful backdrop of lights, with marimba music playing in the background and the sweet sounds of the parrots flying overhead, the gathering consisting of government officials and dignitaries waited for the couple’s grand entrance.
And when they did emerge, the Duchess immediately stunned the audience with her radiant smile and an extraordinary pink dress that fitted her like a glove and complimented her natural beauty. Her husband strutted out into the gathering dressed in a light blue shirt, and jacket with blue trousers and brown shoes.
Finally, the official ceremonies could get underway and as the Prince delivered greetings from his grandmother the Queen of England, he marveled at the magical setting of the great Maya era. Prince William, said, ”These sites are a testament to Belize’s long and pride history of culture,” as he described his tour of the Caracol Maya Ruins earlier that day.
The Duke also commended the work of Belizeans in conservation and climate change, something he says that he and his wife have been fortunate enough to witness for the short period of time that they have been in the country.
”We have been lucky enough to witness some of the biodiversity that you so lovingly nurture here in your jungles and your reefs. You take your responsibility as custodians of nature very seriously and your world leaders are protecting your natural heritage for future generations. The fact that nearly 40% of Belize is in protected status is a testament to that.”
And from Belize rich’s cultural heritage to it its rich cultural diversity ranging from his tour of the Maya chocolate to the Garifuna drumming that had him trying out his punta in Hopkins.
”Belize may be small but your rich blend of ethnic groups contributes to the harmonious tapestry of life. Integral to this is your belief in upholding democratic values that you have protected so proudly for over 40 years. To quote your national anthem Belize really is a tranquil haven. ”
The Prince ended off his speech by thanking Belizeans for the warm welcome and said that his only wish was that he could have stayed longer. He said that he now knows why Belize is so lovingly referred to as the jewel and said that he hopes to return soon with his children.
But while the highlight of the evening was the Prince’s speech, the rich array of cultural food that was available and on display surely did steal the show. From roasted pigs to corn tortillas, tamales, ducunu, Relleno, crabs, and curry shrimps.
