Belize for Cruise Visitors: Day Trips, Shore Excursions, Things to Do

If you’re a Norwegian Cruise Line passenger scheduled to dock at Harvest Caye in Belize, the good news is that there are lots of amazing day trips that you can enjoy.
Harvest Caye is a small island privately owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, but it’s situated just a few miles from the mainland. There is a regular ferry service that connects Harvest Caye to the Placencia Peninsula in southeastern Belize, the gateway to a host of fun and exciting activities on the mainland and surrounding reef. From there, there are a wide variety of exciting day trips available for cruise line passengers, all of which are guaranteed to get you back in plenty of time before your ship disembarks.
The Placencia Peninsula is often nicknamed “the island you can drive to” because of its laidback island atmosphere and narrow causeway connecting it to the mainland. Placencia has some of the most beautiful beaches in a country with hundreds of miles of beaches, and Placencia Village is a quaint little town replete with colorful murals, cozy cafes, souvenir shops, and Mom and Pop restaurants serving up tasty seafood.
Other areas near Placencia that have fun things to do include the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary (CBWS). One of the largest wilderness areas in Belize, the CBWS is home to mountain ranges, thick jungle trails, wetlands, waterfalls, and an astonishing variety of wildlife, including more than 200 jaguars.
Placencia is also very close to popular destinations such as ancient Maya ruins. Built thousands of years ago, these stone cities in the jungle are where visitors can explore giant pyramids, magnificent temples, and vast ball courts where the losing team was sacrificed to appease ancient Maya gods.
The lush nature surrounding Placencia is also where you can enjoy activities like zip lining, horseback riding, and boat tours along jungle rivers to see animals like black howler monkeys, one of the loudest creatures in the world. The cry of a black howler monkey can be heard up to three miles away even through dense jungle.
If you’re docking at Harvest Caye, be sure to book your Belize activities with Barefoot Rentals and Services. Based right in Placencia, Barefoot has golf cart and car rentals that are perfect for exploring the peninsula. Barefoot also organizes a wide range of exciting activities, including boat tours of the Monkey River, swimming at the base of a jungle waterfall, visiting a Maya village, snorkeling, scuba diving, and floating down a lazy jungle river on an inflatable inner tube.
