On the occasion of World Tourism Day, observed annually on September 27th, Anthony Mahler, Minister of Tourism & Diaspora Relations, shared a video message emphasizing the vital role of sustainable tourism in Belize.

World Tourism Day is a global celebration recognizing the transformative influence of tourism on our lives and the global economy. In his video message, Minister Mahler spoke about Belize’s exemplary efforts in sustainable tourism. “The nation’s tourism industry has long been acknowledged for its unwavering commitment to sustainable development. Minister Mahler proudly shared that Belize, known for its awe-inspiring natural beauty, has safeguarded approximately 36% of its natural resources through dedicated conservation efforts. These endeavors protect the country’s lush rainforests, diverse ecosystems, and pristine marine environments. Belize’s dedication to sustainable tourism aligns seamlessly with the World Tourism Day theme, emphasizing that sustainable tourism is not merely an option but a profound responsibility to protect our natural wonders.

One remarkable initiative highlighted in the Minister’s message was Belize’s Blue Bond agreement, an innovative approach to reducing the country’s debt while promoting investments in marine conservation. This initiative showcases Belize’s steadfast commitment to the sustainable management of marine resources and the preservation of the ocean environment. Also mentioned was the “Reef with a Beef” Campaign, launched by the Belize Tourism Board on World Oceans Day 2023, which utilizes humor to raise awareness about ocean sustainability.
