Belize, A Global Retirement Spot Where American Expats Will Fit In
As the Baby Boomer generation continues to age, millions of Americans will either soon retire or have already retired. Whether it’s the desire to stretch their incomes further or simply a way to start a new life, many retirees are selecting Belize.
Reachable from major cities across the United States in five hours or less thanks to non-stop flights from all of the largest airlines, Belize is located on the Caribbean coast of Central America just south of Mexico’s famed Yucatan Peninsula. Belize is a relatively small country (about the same size as Vermont) with a tiny population (fewer than 400,000 people), and the country offers retirees a chance to enjoy life in a warm weather climate with far lower living costs than places such as Arizona or Florida.
As a former British colony, Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language. The government of Belize has made tremendous investments in infrastructure and to protect the environment, allowing retirees to easily gain residence while paying no taxes on income earned outside of Belize as well as very low property taxes (just 1-1.5%).
Belize’s greatest asset is its unspoiled nature. The mainland is home to vast rainforests, mountain ranges, savannah, wetlands, old-growth broadleaf forests, and jungle, all teeming with an astonishing diversity of wildlife. Not to be outdone, the country’s more than 400 offshore islands are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to some of the finest snorkeling, sailing, fishing, and scuba diving found anywhere on the planet.
Belize continues to receive high praise from prestigious travel publications as a must-see destination in 2018. Popular travel guides from publishers such as National Geographic, the New York Times, Fodors, and Rough Guides have all recommended visiting Belize.
An excellent place to live or retire in Belize is Orchid Bay.
