The sleepy fishing village of Hopkins springs to life in April with the lively, foot-stomping International Paranda Folk Art and Music Festival. During this three-day event, you can experience the authentic music of Belize’s Garifuna people.
The festival, known locally as Paranda Fest, takes place from April 20 through April 22 and it features a number of exciting events. You can learn about Garifuna cooking, try your hand at traditional fishing methods, explore Garifuna arts and crafts, join in the dancing and experience everything else that Belize has to offer.
What is Paranda?
Paranda is the traditional folk music of Belize’s Garifuna people. Although the Garifuna make up only five percent of Belize’s population, they have had an enormous impact on its culture. You can find elements of the Afro-Caribbean Garifuna flavor in Belizean food, music, and dancing.
The Garifuna are a people descended from a mixture of African slaves imported into the Caribbean and indigenous people of the region. This unique blending of two different populations has given the Garifuna a truly unique culture. On one hand, the Garifuna have retained many influences from their African heritage, including their language and musical traditions. Likewise, their heritage inherited from the indigenous populations of the Caribbean play an important role in modern Garifuna culture.
The Garifuna resisted all attempts at enslavement and fought hard to preserve their culture and independence. In 2001, the United Nations named the Garifuna’s living culture a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
A Friendly Village
The Paranda Fest is a celebration of the music and art of this thriving, vital culture. It’s held in Hopkins, which is an authentic Garifuna village in Southern Belize. The festival is held at the Palmento Grove Cultural and Fishing Lodge, an authentic and sustainably-managed Garifuna lodge.
Hopkins is a laid-back seaside community that has been called “the friendliest village in Belize.” It is a community that still relies on fishing for its economy. Here, you’ll find traditional food, wide expanses of gorgeous, unspoiled beaches, mountain views and a friendly, easygoing attitude.
