Car Rentals in Belize

Car Rentals in Belize

All international flights into Belize land at the Philip Goldson Airport in Ladyville, just a few miles north of Belize City, but most visitors are eager to head off to more remote destinations. If you’re wondering whether you can get a car rental at a Belize airport, the good news is yes, you definitely can.

In fact, anyone with a valid driver’s license in their home country can get a Belize car rental and legally drive in the country. Many visitors prefer to drive themselves instead of paying for expensive domestic flights or cramming into an elderly taxicab. And when you opt for a car rental in Belize, you get the luxury of stopping along the route to explore a Mom and Pop restaurant or take photos of the amazing views.

Driving in Belize is pretty simple for most people. When you opt for a car rental, Belize opens up to you in a way that flying or sitting in a shuttle simply can’t match. Many of Belize’s current residents started out as vacationers who began with a car rental in Belize City and then fell in love with the country.

The rules for driving in Belize are almost identical to those in the United States. Cars drive on the righthand side of the road, all road signs are in English, and all distances are measured in miles. About the only big difference is that drivers in Belize traditionally signal a right-hand turn before making a left turn. This is because the tradition is to pull over to the right while waiting for oncoming traffic to clear.

Other than that, be aware that Belize has just four paved highways, which are simple, two-lane roads. Almost all other roadways are dirt or gravel and may be difficult or impossible to drive during periods of inclement weather. The four national highways connect Belize City to points north all the way to the border with Mexico, points west to the border with Guatemala, and points south, including Hopkins, Dangriga, Placencia, and Punta Gorda.

Most rental cars in Belize are modern with a full range of safety features and amenities and are priced similarly to the United States.
