Belize celebrated World Tourism Day in a grand fashion yesterday, as the country swept multiple awards at the inaugural World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards. The ceremony, hosted at Oakridge Venues in Spanish Lookout, honored global leaders in sustainable travel and tourism, and Belize’s remarkable achievements were center stage.

The country was bestowed the prestigious “Leading Sustainable Destination” award, with the spotlight shining brightly on the innovative Blue Bond initiative. This groundbreaking financial mechanism, which combines debt restructuring with dedicated funding for marine conservation, showcases Belize’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its natural treasures and tackling climate change.

Che’il Mayan Chocolate was recognized for its efforts in preserving cultural heritage, earning the “Leading Sustainable Cultural Heritage Project” award.
The Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association won the “Leading Sustainable Marine Conservation Initiative” award, showcasing its commitment to safeguarding Belize’s vital marine ecosystems.
The Belize Tourism Industry Association was honored with the “Leading Sustainable Community Engagement Programme” award, recognizing its crucial work in fostering collaboration and sustainable practices within the tourism sector.
